Do you want to experience how it feels to be a fire fighter?
You and someone in your family can learn about the healthy lifestyle needed to be part of this emergency service, whilst getting hands on with the training involved.
Will you be one of the lucky ones to get fired up?
October half term will see the crew at Walsall Fire Station, working with the Walsall Active Youth team to offer families the opportunity to experience life as a fire fighter. Through fun and exciting activities across the week, we’re looking to provide an insight into the role of a fire fighter, the importance of eating healthily and keeping active, as well as, road safety and much more.
If you are aged between 11 and 18 and have a family member (over 18) willing to give it a try, get in touch for an application form.

Saturday 17th January saw the Walsall Active Youth team – blowing away those Christmas cobwebs, and kicking off the first of the Fun4Life Fundays of 2009! We arrived at Bloxwich Leisure Centre to see eager faces of previous clinic attendees, who were all keen to tell each other about their Christmases, and the doom of going back to school!
And then the fun began….After a quick change poolside – a massive hoard of ‘Fun4Lifers’ took to the water, to take on the huge inflatable obstacle course, and in some instances – our Fun4Life instructors. For an hour – smiles were beaming, and laughter was deafening…
After a quick change, and a serving of energy replenishing fruit – it was time to take on the FITZONE. The WAY team did well to keep up with the frantic spinning of legs on the bikes, the thudding of the punch bag, and the ‘up and down, forward and back’ movement of the resistance machines… Our Fun4Lifers were ‘in the zone’!!!
After two hours of fun-filled activity (yes – 2 hours!!), we refuelled and hydrated ourselves, whilst Jo handed out goody bags to all those involved. It was great to see everyone’s faces (even the red faces during exercise!) at the Funday, and it was good to catch up with parents too. Keep reading for our next event in April.

January saw the start of a brand new swimming pool based session called Splash!
Splash is a water based physical activity session for children aged 8-16 years who are looking to increase their physical activity and fitness levels through swimming, whilst also improving their swimming skills.
The session looks to show that there is more to swimming than counting lengths swam, and although there are sessions which will focus on stroke technique and swimming endurance, session content also varies from pool based games such as water polo and water volleyball, to lifeguard and survival skills , with the main focus being that everyone has FUN! Splash sessions run during term time at:
EDC in Rushall on
Thursday evenings.
8-11 year olds: 5.00pm-6.00pm
12-16 year olds: 6.00pm-7.00pm.Sessions cost just £1.50 and will re-start after Easter on Thursday 23rd April.
For more information please don’t hesitate to contact the WAY team on 01902 605500.

Walsall Active Youth are heading to Woodlands Camp in April for the second of their FunDays. Many of you have already sent back your permission slips and the morning looks to be a fun action packed adventure on the full scale assault course constructed around and across a natural lake culminating with a 100 metre long zip wire to across the lake to end the morning!
In the next newsletter we will include lots of pictures of the event and a write up of the morning so keep a look out in July. If you have any ideas for what we could do for the next event all suggestions are greatly received.

“With summer fast approaching it’s a great time to get more active“
Now the weather is beginning to brightening up & the days are lengthening there are no excuses not to get 60 minutes of activity outdoors each day.
There are a number of benefits of outdoor play these include both physical and mental benefits. Physically we know it benefits weight control, improves strength, builds endurance and aids coordination. Besides all these benefits, playing outside stretches children’s thinking and knowledge, as well as allows children to move freely and make noise. This is a form of self-expression that is often restricted indoors.
Children are going outside to play less and less these days, with the biggest concern being your children’s safety. Check out our section on Top Tips to get your child more active outdoor play.
